TOURNEY IN THE BARONY OF THE ANGELS

The Barony of the Angels will hold an informal tourney on Saturday, April 22, and Sunday, April 23, in Black Mountain Park on Mount San Jacinto, in Riverside County near the town of Idlewild (see map - omitted). If there is a late frost the event may be called off (because of frozen pipes) but this is unlikely.

TENTATIVE SCHEDULE:

Saturday, April 22

  • 9:00 Park opens
  • 2:00 Grand March
  • 2:30 Choose sides (by lot) for a general war among all fighters who choose to enter. After the war ends there will be challenge matches till dusk.
  • 3:30 Archery.
  • 4:00 Cookery contest: pastry or sweet bread.
  • 5:00 General policing of the area.
  • 5:30 Dinner break (bring your own).
  • 6:30 Revels. People learning medieval instruments who can play dance music are heartily encouraged to do so.

Sunday, April 23

  • 12:00 War of Roses and Thistles--pillow fight between ladies and gentlemen (bring your own pillows). After which there will be the final rounds of the archery competition, foot races, a tug-of-war (Angels against all comers, with Sárkányi Géró as anchorman), and many other games.

At the same time there will be fighters' workshops held by the Knights Marshalls; any other Marshalls or experienced fighters who can come and participate will be very welcome.

  • 2:00 Challenge matches.
  • 4:00 Comments from the throne, policing of grounds, and departure. Someone will remain at the site until dusk or so.

Bring your own food, and other provisions, in sufficient quantity; the nearest shops are some 40 miles away except for Idlewild which is a tourist trap. This is not a place for elegant costumes. The weather will probably be chilly, the terrain is rough, and many games are planned. Wear warm, washable medievals; pleasant dress is advised. Dress as if you were going on a hunt, not to court. There is reserved space for 100 people plus unreserved space for more. For details, contact the Baron and Baroness at (phone omitted).

Memories

There was fighting, archery, a cooking contest, twilzey-whopping, and a revel. ~ From: Wilhelm von Schlüssel's History
